Arlington Heights, IL — December 1, 2011 — The Wheeling Township Democratic Organization (WTDO) hosted an overflow crowd of more than 70 interested residents during last night's successful Candidates Forum. It was held in the Buechner Room and adjoining lobby at the Arlington Heights Village Hall. The event featured five Congressional candidates: 8th District candidates Tammy Duckworth and Raja Krishnamoorthi as well as 10th District candidates Brad Schneider, Ilya Sheyman and John Tree.
The audience included mostly members of WTDO plus interested Democrats from throughout the 8th and 10th Districts. A handful of self-identified Tea Party voters also listened intently, with some videotaping the meeting. Also in attendance were three young staffers for incumbent Republican Rep. Bob Dold (IL-10).
Issues included protecting the American social safety net, job growth, fair balance in taxes, the Occupy and Tea Party movements, the environment, and whether or not vitriolic right-wing rhetoric was influencing acts of right-wing terrorism in Oklahoma (Dr. Tiller), Arizona (Rep. Giffords) and elsewhere. Questions were submitted by voters via email, Twitter and on notecards during the meeting.
"Our October and November Candidates Forums were a great opportunity for voters to learn more about the exciting field of Democrats running in the 8th and 10th Districts," said Kathleen Sances, WTDO Committeewoman. "With the Tea Party leading Republicans by the nose down a path of radical right-wing extremism freshmen conservatives like Joe Walsh and Bob Dold are more and more out of step with the voters in Wheeling Township and the rest of Illinois."
WTDO members in good standing will discuss and vote on endorsements for Congressional and other candidates in early 2012. There is no WTDO monthly meeting in December.
