Arlington Heights, IL — December 1, 2011 — Indicating how frightened Republicans are by the strong field of 10th District Democrats, three staffers for incumbent Republican Rep. Bob Dold (IL-10) attended the November 30th Wheeling Township Democrats Candidates Forum. The Dold staffers included Philippe Melin, the Congressman's taxpayer-funded District Representative and 2010 campaign field director, plus an as-yet unidentified man and woman.
"It's really sad when a sitting Congressman like Bob Dold feels a need to send not one but three staffers to weasel their way into a Democratic meeting," said Renee Shapiro, WTDO Membership Co-Chair. "Then again, Dold should be very worried about next year's election given his Tea Party-like votes to kill Medicare, gut reasonable environmental protections, defund women's healthcare and even redefine rape to make it more difficult for victims to seek help."
"Rep. Dold's worst enemy is his own radical voting record," she concluded.
The trio wrote notes and appeared to have digital audio recorders. Displaying apparent embarrassment at being caught, Melin attempted to cover his face throughout most of the event by alternately using a flier from a judicial candidate, a Wheeling Dems membership application and pages from a notepad.
At the end of the event, the young staffers — dubbed "The Three Mouseketeers" by event volunteers — rushed out of the room with Melin again trying to cover his face by pulling his jacket's hood completely over his head indoors.
How the 2012 Dold campaign might use or distort any of the information they recorded is not yet known.
Besides the Dold infiltrators, the Candidates Forum was enjoyed by an overflow crowd of more than 70 voters. With the room at capacity several people stood in the back and out into the adjoining lobby.
The event featured 8th district candidates Lt. Col. Tammy Duckworth and Raja Krishnamoorthi plus 10th district candidates Brad Schneider, Ilya Sheyman and Col. John Tree.
